Having an office party or other event and need a playlist of Christmas songs that aren't religious? Or perhaps you're not Christian but want to celebrate the joy of the holiday season. Here's a playlist of songs without mention of religion.

Holiday Playlists for Non-Denominational Christmastime Events
Every year I organize a Christmastime event for more than 200 people. Technically, we call it a "Holiday Bash" to be inclusive.
As much as Christians may seek to keep the Christ in Christmas, some events like this holiday social call for a playlist of Christmastime songs that focus less on Bethlehem, the little drummer boy, and baby Jesus and more on the joyful spirit of the season. This is especially the case for office parties, government or school functions, and similar gatherings where people of diverse religions come together at the end of the year.
During the holidays, many people face this music predicament. Since parties without music are simply meetings, here's an answer to your party playlist dilemma: a list of non-religious Christmastime songs by pop, rock, R&B, and country stars. It's guaranteed to get your party hopping.
1. "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" by Sam Smith
Sam Smith's voice is as smooth as butter in this 2014 recording of a holiday classic previously recorded by superstars such as Judy Garland, Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra, and Ella Fitzgerald. He more than holds his own as he wishes listeners a stress-free Christmas season full of merriment and light, complete with faithful friends gathered 'round.
2. "I'll Be Home for Christmas" by Rascal Flatts
Bing Crosby originally recorded this Christmastime favorite to honor soldiers stationed overseas during the holidays. This 2009 cover version by country group Rascal Flatts is harmonious and oozes with the lonesomeness and longing that are implicit in the song's message.
The narrator desperately misses home and assumes he probably won't be able to be with his loved ones for the holiday. However, he is with them in spirit.
3. "Baby It's Cold Outside" by Idina Menzel and Michael Bublé
This sexy call and response duet was originally recorded for the 1949 movie, Neptune's Daughter, and it won an Academy Award for Best Original Song. The song is a conversation between a woman who cites reasons why she really must go home and a man who implores her to stay with him. He continues to serve her drinks and cites the cold weather as a justification for her staying.
Modern critics contend that the song borders on coercion and the man needs to accept "no" as an answer. At the time the song was written, it was improper for an unmarried woman to stay the night with a man. Idina Menzel and Michael Bublé's 2014 rendition spent three weeks at the top spot on the Adult Contemporary Chart.
4. "Please Come Home For Christmas" by Jon Bon Jovi
Although many others have recorded this tune, I like the rock undertones of Bon Jovi's 1992 cover. It conveys the heartwrenching loneliness of being without your one and only during the holidays when everyone else is surrounded by family, friends, and their one and only.

5. "We Need a Little Christmas" by Johnny Mathis
There's nothing like Christmas to revitalize sagging spirits. This song was originally written for the Broadway production of Mame, and the song was performed after the central character lost her fortune in the 1929 Wall Street stock market crash. She directs her household help to get the home ready for Christmas as a way of bringing joy back into their lives.
Johnny Mathis' 1986 cover of the peppy, uptempo classic will certainly get you in the holiday mood. With descriptions of decorating and mentions of Santa and Christmas carols, you'll be brimming with joy before the song is over.
6. "Run Rudolph Run" by Chuck Berry
No one did rock and roll quite like the phenomenal Chuck Berry. In this energetic 1958 ditty, he pays homage to Rudolph, calling the red-nosed reindeer a "mastermind" and encouraging him to rush along and get those gifts delivered. If you're not toe-tapping by the time this song is over, then you need to check your pulse because there's something dead wrong with you.
7. "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus" by John Cougar Mellencamp
Trade in the sing-song childish versions of this song for this fast-paced 1987 rock rendition with some heavy fiddle. It's a more grown-up presentation of the song that involves a son sneaking downstairs and accidentally catching a glimpse of his mother smooching with Old. St. Nick. The song does make you wonder just what kind of reindeer games those parents were up to.
8. "Silver Bells" by Martina McBride
Martina McBride has the voice of an angel, or a choir of them, in this 1998 cover of Bing Crosby's 1950 classic Christmas carol. She describes the happy hustle and bustle of pre-holiday shopping in the city, as Salvation Army bell ringers ask for donations for the needy.
9. "All I Want for Christmas Is You" by Mariah Carey
This original 1994 Christmas song by Mariah Carey deserves to be a classic alongside other Christmas greats. It's that good. The holiday song has an uptempo beat, church bells and sleigh bells in the background, and a retro 1960s feel. Mariah's voice soars as she tells her sweetheart to skip the presents because all she needs is him.
10. "Winter Wonderland" by Michael Bublé
Given how internationally successful he is, I'm probably alone in thinking Michael Bublé's voice is cheesy—like he's trying too hard to be someone else. For all those people who are booing and hissing at me right now, here's his 2011 cover of the Christmas classic which I think is only moderately overdone. The song celebrates the magic of winter and actually doesn't mention Christmas, although it's become a holiday favorite.
11. "Santa Tell Me" by Ariana Grande
This cheery 2014 song is an original holiday tune. It features a narrator who has had her heart broken in the past. Before she makes herself vulnerable to love and the possibility of being hurt, she wants reassurance from Santa that her current love interest is "the one":
Santa, tell me if you're really there
Don't make me fall in love again if he won't be here
Next year.

12. "Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer" by Elmo and Patsy
While the grieving family blames Santa and crew for Grandma's untimely demise, it's suspicious that Grandpa is taking the news of her passing so well.
This rowdy 1979 comedy song describes Grandma's unfortunate decision to drink too much holiday egg nog at a family gathering. She forgot her medication, and her family let her wander out in the snow.
The old woman was later found with hoofmarks on her back, the victim of a hit and fly accident blamed on none other than Santa and his reindeer. Now the family wonders what to do with her gifts.
13. "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree" by Brenda Lee
Who would believe that Brenda Lee recorded this 1958 holiday favorite when she was only 13 years old? Apparently that's not too young to have witnessed the magic of the mistletoe. In the most up-tempo, celebratory manner, the song also celebrates Christmas caroling and decking the halls.
14. "Hard Candy Christmas" by Dolly Parton
This 1982 country song was recorded for the musical The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas. The narrator works hard to convince her audience and herself that although she feels sorrowful and disappointed by a personal setback, she won't let that get her down. She generates creative possibilities for all the things she might do with her life from here, comparing it to a hard candy Christmas with lots of flavors.
15. "White Christmas" by Gwen Stefani
Most of us in the United States cannot expect at least an inch of newly fallen snow on Christmas. Exceptions, according to the National Centers for Environmental Information, include:
- Idaho,
- Minnesota,
- Maine,
- Upstate New York,
- the Allegheny Mountains of Pennsylvania and West Virginia,
- the Rockies, and
- the Sierra Nevada Mountains.
That doesn't stop us from hoping for the magic and glamor of a white Christmas, as Gwen Stefani does in the 2017 cover of this holiday classic made famous by Bing Crosby. Her faster tempo version feels more updated yet still reminds the listener of their childhood.
16. "That's Christmas to Me" by Pentatonix
Christmas means something a little different to everyone, but this 2014 original song paints pictures of iconic holiday memories: waiting for Santa, hanging stockings, and the joy of family togetherness. These are the memories that you look back on and remember years later when the kids are grown and gone.
17. "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" by Gene Autry
It's hard to believe that way back in 1949, Gene Autry originally rejected this famous Christmas song, but thankfully, his wife convinced him to record it. The rest is history.
The famous ninth reindeer was born with a birth defect, a glowing bright red nose that caused his peers to bully and shun him. But the clever lad turned his physical oddity into an opportunity by shining his way through the fog, helping Santa deliver his load of packages on time. That leadership gained him the acceptance and adoration of all.
18. "You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch" by Thurl Ravenscroft
Cuddly as a cactus, the Grinch had an empty heart full of dirty socks and termites in his smile. No wonder the mean one didn't like Christmas.
This song is famously featured in the classic 1966 Christmas cartoon How the Grinch Stole Christmas! Thankfully by the end of the movie, the monster with garlic for a soul found his heart had grown three sizes.
19. "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town" by Bruce Springsteen
Bruce Springsteen lit a fire under this 1934 children's Christmas classic, and his 1975 rock version recorded live in concert has become a classic in its own right. Just in case you're not on your best behavior this time of year, he reminds you that the man in red is watching and taking names.

20. "Redneck 12 Days of Christmas" by Jeff Foxworthy
Every redneck and wannabe knows that the best Christmas gifts come from Walmart. This funny 1996 country song changes the lyrics to the traditional "12 Days of Christmas" song and adds colorful social commentary about the redneck way of life, such as burping the chorus of "Jingle Bells" or misspelling words in Christmas lights.
You'll be singing this on the way to the tractor pull:

Flourish Anyway--I'm afraid my access to & experience with the internet is limited. I did take classes in Digital Filmmaking & Multimedia in the mid-2000s, only to have the school shut down permanently about a decade ago. If you have Adobe Flash enabled (not even sure if that is still fully functional), you may still be able to find the website I created while I was there--laustcawz.biz or possibly www.laustcawz.biz I'm not even able to access it at the library or at Apple stores anymore & it doesn't function correctly with my phone (which is what I've been using for my responses on your HubPages). Even if you can get to it, there's are some things that are a little off or in need of correction, but I haven't had access to any versions of the computer programs I used to create the site (or the subsite it's linked to) since the school closed. I wasn't able to graduate or successfully transfer, either. In any case, if the site is still there anywhere, it has some examples of my video work, poetry, art & music, while the subsite focuses on my (mostly underappreciated) favorites in music, TV & film.

There apparently is a lot of confusion/misconceptions about the way Christmas is celebrated by modern society (in the U.S., anyhow). From what I've read, for example, there was supposed to have actually been someone named Nicholas who was canonized after death & so was named a saint (hence, "St. Nicholas", or, as it's morphed through the centuries, "Santa Claus"). Most of the folklore about Christmas, however, has little or nothing to do with religion. The "Christmas tree" apparently originated as a part of a pagan ritual. As for the rest (or most of it), it sprang from (or, at least, was popularized by) Thomas Nast, a comic panelist for publications in the 19th century; &, of course, Clement Clarke Moore's poem "A Visit From St. Nicholas ('Twas The Night Before Christmas)". Being an atheist myself, I prefer to search for songs that either parody the religious element/traditional attitudes or are simply about winter/snow. Paula - I'm with poor Tom. I keep him around because kids kinda do that to parents over the years. I also have a porcelain Victorian doll head who resembles a much younger version of me but with curly hair piled atop her head in an old-fashioned updo. When my daughter was a toddler, she developed a fascination with her despite my constant "no, no don't touch" and attempts to place it elsewhere. Paula - We have a large decorative "stuffed" turkey that my daughter used to play with when she was a child, and he's been out for awhile, ready for his holiday. He used to have a small pole in his back to make him stand up straight, but she broke it years ago playing with him. Now the cats snuggle up with him. Oh Flourish....I'm hopeless. My emotions are always on Highest level when it comes to music. Most Christmas songs have me sobbing within the first few seconds.....unless it's a nonsense song like "Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer!" There are long periods of time that I simply can't listen to music at all.

Lots of my favorites on this list! Though I think many of the religious holiday tunes are wonderful, since I don't celebrate Christmas on a religious level, these alternative songs are more my speed.
The tunes on the list that become holiday earworms for me are Mariah Carey's "All I Want for Christmas is You" and Wham's "Last Christmas" (love the video, too).
Faves I'd add to the list are Bing Crosby "I'll Be Home for Christmas," "White Christmas," and Andy Williams' "It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year."

I'm sure the animals will be fun as I have to keep Moma & Coca (pit bulls) (daughters dogs) away from Buddy & Midnight as they would hurt them but Sweetness gets along with all the animals. The cat & rabbit will chase one another around the room playing while Sweetness runs back & forth between the two rooms playing with everyone. Since you made this list I'm going to download some songs and make a disc for the homeless shelter so those people can have some Christmas music, however; I will donate the music in honor of you, after all, it was your list, I know they will enjoy it. Since I've begun to prepare to make others Christmas better I seem to be more now in the spirit. My daughter suggested I bake some homemade bread also to donate. She is donating a couple hams & turkeys but the shelter will be cooking them since she will be working thru the holidays.

A great list to begin the season Flourish. I firmly believe in remembering the reason for the season, but acknowledge that there are others who do not share my beliefs.
I am surprised at how many of these I know. I'll have to admit though that #37 is a fave. But then, I could listen to Nat King Cole all day. What a wonderful voice. On the other hand, as soon as I hear the opening notes of #26 I have turn away. For some reason that one pushes my buttons (and not in a good way).

shanmarie - Aww, didn't mean to make you cry. Some of them are bittersweet. My absolute favorite is "Baby, It's Cold Outside" but not by the singers listed above. I absolutely adore the version by Ann-Margaret and Al Hirt. It oozes sensuality and to me, in that version, there is no question of anyone's victimhood. The first time I heard it I was like "What? This is a Christmas song?!
Haha!" It still brings a smile to my face.

Oh, my! What a great list. Some of them, I don't care for that much; not because I don't like the song or tune, but because they make me melancholy, instead of cheery. "I'll be Home For Christmas" is one such.
As far as "White Christmas" goes, as a California San Francisco Bay Area native, I've changed the words thusly:
"I'm dreaming of a white Christmas, just like the ones I NEVER KNEW!" LOL
I think you have omitted another couple of funny ones: "All I Want For Christmas is My Two Front Teeth," and "I Ain't Gettin' Nuthin' For Christmas, Cuz I Ain't Been Nuthin' But Bad."

Very nice article, enjoyed reading it. Reminded me of songs I'd had forgotten about. Again this year I really just not in the holiday spirit like last year. So I thought maybe this year that I would bake a whole bunch of cookies and donate them to the homeless shelter since all I have is my animals for Christmas. Of course, I will be fixing the animals homemade dog food (Sweetness, Coco, Mama) & treats but Buddy the rabbit or Midnight (kitten), I'm not sure yet what to make them special to have for dinner. My daughter will be working and my other daughter will spend it with her husband family. Not sure if my brother will be able to make it over.
