Reina Soratani says in her afterword that she had originally intended this to be a rom-com, but something happened.

Hoo boy, did it always!

While I thoroughly enjoyed this book and its honest and at times all-likewise-existent depiction of the emotional trauma heroine Violette has gone through, information technology is much darker than the average shoujo light novel. Yep, in that location's a contrary harem attribute, and yes, it's the type of isekai known every bit yarinaoshi loop (AKA going back in time to prepare a mistake), but information technology also comes with content warnings for emotional (and implied sexual) abuse. Violette's life is a misery thanks to her truly atrocious parents (the author says she hates Violette'due south dad), and if it wasn't for Yulan and Marin, the poor girl would be in even worse shape.

So, long story brusque: this is a good book. Merely don't go into information technology expecting fluffy reverse harem rom-com action.

I started serializing this story thinking I wanted to write a rom-com, but suddenly information technology turned serious.

If you're asking how it turned out like this, I, the author, am the one who knows that answer the least.

To be honest, a reader wouldn't be too out of line expecting a rom-com from just the encompass of I Swear I Won't Bother Yous Once again!. Gentle colors of rose, biscuit, brownish. An assembly of attractive or cute characters of whom at least some seem to be in some phase of attraction to each other, peculiarly the ones sitting on the couch. The title with its exclamation marker.

Only wait a picayune more closely, and only one of them is grin.

Our chief grapheme, Violette, is the somber girl in the heart of the composition. The story starts when Violette is all of a sudden fourth dimension-jumped from being imprisoned for a terrible, unspecified offense, to the fourth dimension when she but meets Maryjune, her one-half-sis who was the victim of the criminal offence. Given a new lease on life, and the possibility of living gratuitous, Violette decides she will cut herself off from others and live a solitary life until she is of age to join a religious society.

Needless to say, this doesn't work out as planned. She's a loftier schoolhouse student, for i thing, and she'south had connections with a number of people upwards until she was her current historic period. These include a long-term friendship with a beautiful underclassman, Yulan, and an unresolved vanquish on Claudia, a prince and also the school president. There'south also her family: her father, stepmother, and Maryjune herself, a sweetness immature girl who is new to life as a nobleman's girl, and whose naïve blunders and commoner's background are getting her some "attention" from the daughter-bullies of the school.

To be honest, every bit little equally her male parent cares near her, Violette's family life is better than information technology was with her deceased mother. Her past family life is a major source of what I consider a thread of psychological horror that shows up now so. An additional element is Yulan himself, who, when we see things from his point of view, is obsessed with Violette to the point of vowing he will destroy anyone who harms her. He even acts belligerently toward Claudia when Claudia simply talks with Violette.

It was interesting reading a light novel where the story isn't total of action, or even events, to speak of. Scenes largely consist of adequately ordinary school days things--well, some of them are more ordinary for a posh school--like intimate teas, or Violette sitting on a bench in a garden on campus thinking most things, or meeting a friend after school for a shopping date. The characters' emotions are in the forefront and are the major source of suspense. At times the emotions are over-elaborated, in my opinion, or sometimes Violette's conclusions don't quite make sense, only the reader'south anxiety over her making missteps leading to a reprise of her "bad catastrophe" is a major part of what makes the book tick.

The setting is somewhat indefinite, only it adds to the otherworldly issue that I sometimes go from anime set in elite schools: Maria-sama ga Miteru, Hana Yori Dango, Dear Brother, etc. In that location'south no indication as to where in Japan, or the globe, nosotros might be. There are automobiles--which came as a minor surprise about a third of the manner through the book--but no hint that these kids accept prison cell phones (or that there are phones at all?). This could be taking place anytime between 1960 and today, as far as I tin can tell.

This is quite a unique light novel, in my admittedly limited feel, both in subject affair and mood. I will definitely be picking up the next ane to see where things get next. Three and a half stars, rounded up because information technology's nice to run into something like this in a ocean of male child-centric isekai. This is the first lite novel I've given more than than two or three stars to. Congrats, I Swear I Won't Bother You Again!

Content alarm for this volume: emotional abuse, (view spoiler)[possibly sexual besides (hibernate spoiler)], and a potential love interest who displays manipulative and decision-making qualities.

Violette is in prison for a crime she has, out of jealousy, committed against her one-half-sis Maryjune. She has come a long way and now deeply regrets her actions. She wishes she could go back in time and alive a placidity life, bothering no one, but she knows that'due south incommunicable. Except suddenly that's exactly what happens - from one moment to the next, time rewinds itself and she finds herself one time again being introduced to her father'southward new wife (his quondam mistress) and his half-daughter (who was conceived while Violette's female parent was still alive).

This time, Violette is determined to make it through the next two years without causing harm. Afterwards she graduates, she wants to join a convent and spend the rest of her life quietly apologetic for the sins she committed in her other timeline. Her feelings of guilt are also bully for her to contemplate any other future. Even so, it won't be easy to reach her goal. While she no longer blames Maryjune for annihilation or wants to harm her, she can't will away the pain that Maryjune's presence causes her, and she tin can't change the kind of person she is. Nevertheless, she tries hard to practise better this time around, and her efforts don't go unnoticed. If she's lucky, possibly it will be enough.

I had no idea what I was getting into when I started this. The title and cover brand information technology await and audio like at to the lowest degree half a dozen other "villainess trying to brand things right/avert a bad end" romances out there, and obviously the author originally intended it to exist a rom-com. I figured this would basically exist Accomplishments of the Duke's Daughter without the isekai "reborn in my favorite otome game" element.

What I got instead was an introspective character-focused drama that was more concerned with the characters' various emotional wounds and insecurities than with romance (although I absolutely look future volumes to focus on romance more, and I'm very nervous most the direction the serial might take).

I assumed Prince Claudia would the common cold and arrogant type who'd gradually warm up to Violette. Instead, he was surprisingly bad-mannered and lacking in self-confidence. Yulan appeared to be the cute younger blood brother type, the 1 who always knew how to get Violette to relax. However, (view spoiler)[this turned out to be an human activity - the existent Yulan was kind of horrifying, and reminded me strongly of Toma in the otome-game based anime Amnesia. (For those who haven't played the game or watched the series: Toma is a reassuring childhood friend-blazon honey interest whose obsession with the heroine reaches the betoken where he literally drugs and cages her. Yulan actually thinks to himself that he'd like to lock Violette up so that he can proceed her to himself, and so my fears are non unjustified.) (hide spoiler)] And Violette...wow.

Her parents were monstrous. I don't care how Violette'due south mother behaved towards Auld, her father, it didn't excuse the way he neglected her and and so treated her similar i of Maryjune'south accessories. And Violette'southward mother was a sick and twisted woman. When Auld abandoned her in favor of his mistress, she raised Violette every bit a boy (view spoiler)[in gild to accept a mini-Auld by her side - there were indications that her behavior towards Violette was possibly sexually also equally emotionally calumniating (on-page: the mode she caressed Violette and fabricated her respond to the proper noun Auld securely disturbed a character who witnessed it). When Violette striking puberty, her mother cast her off in disgust and and so basically willed herself to dice in a final-ditch endeavour to get Auld to care near her. (hide spoiler)]

The writing didn't initially entreatment to me, except for the fact that it was tertiary person POV. Lots of descriptions of the characters' feelings with very piffling action. But then the characters started interacting more than, and it became articulate that several of them were extremely screwed upward. I plant myself unable to wait away - part of it was a kind of literary rubbernecking, and part of it was that I really started to get emotionally invested in the characters. Here'south hoping the author has other plans for Yulan than to make him Violette's top beloved interest, because she deserves better. And I actually want to know what's going on between Yulan and Claudia (one-half brothers, maybe?), whether Claudia volition manage to grow as a person the way he seems to want to, and whether the painfully naive Maryjune will ever realize the harm she unintentionally inflicts upon Violette.

I'm even so non entirely sure this was an enjoyable read, just information technology was definitely an interesting one. And then far there hasn't been much of a plot - I'm hoping that Soratani isn't the sort of author who writes interesting characters just then has no idea what to do with them. At any charge per unit, I definitely plan to continue reading this series, merely I'm very nervous about where it might go. Information technology could either be amazing, or a completely horrifying brain bleach-requiring disaster.

Extras:

Black and white illustrations throughout, and a short afterword by the author. She hates Violette's father (yay!) just seems to like Yulan (ehhh). Hopefully she likes his want to support Violette only recognizes that he'd be an extremely unhealthy dear involvement for her. Crossing my fingers.

I enjoyed myself a lot with this! You'll either dearest or hate this I think, depending on how much the aspects of this book bother you, then I'll endeavor to explicate those.

Characters
I beloved the characters, here'south why: they're all secretly messed up! Except for the father, he'south just very clearly an asshole just as well in an interesting mode. They all have a clear personality and backstory and some characters withal have a fleck of mystery to them. I love this book for their personalities and goals and how messed up they are, considering it makes their dynamics and relationships conflict interestingly. And here'due south the absurd role: my favourite grapheme is the MAIN graphic symbol (gasp). She's seriously messed upward, really flawed, but still likeable by doing her all-time and showing actual intelligence here and there. Her thinking pattern is but screwed from trauma and a terrible upbringing, but it felt like information technology fit and I could actually see how she'd have snapped and went to do horrible things in the past. This does mean she's not a very cheerful character and she does think a lot, so keep that in mind if such things irritate you lot.
We've however got a lot to learn almost the characters so a few of them are underdeveloped compared to the rest, just it feels similar that is planned and will be rectified later.

The plot
This is a daily life story and a huge redemption grapheme arc, but there'due south no plot, so you've been warned! Think of this more equally slice of life, but the version well-nigh messed upward aristocrats going to a fancy school. You volition see Violette navigating daily aristocrat life, which could exist tiresome for some people.
At the same time, the overarching 'plot' is basically the protagonist's redemption arc and information technology's written nice and ho-hum. I'd like to actually encounter flashbacks of the evil things she did, since we only got the blank minimum data from her thoughts now, but the whole volume is nearly her walking on eggshells to not go thrown in jail again; trying not to carp anyone equally the title suggests. Information technology's a redemption arc which is only known to the protagonist because she magically finds herself back in time to redo part of her life, so the question really is if and when she'll forgive herself. What makes it work so well for me is that she's not looking for forgiveness from others and people who have known her to be bad in the past do care for her with caution. And while she's trying to avoid lashing out again, this isn't easy for her because she still struggles with the bitter feelings towards her situation and stepsister that acquired her original downfall.

The writing
This is a light novel, so the language is very simplistic. Personally I don't listen it and relish the quick pace it brings along! If y'all like complex prose then this is probably not for yous.

Setting
I beloved the parts where they do some aloof worldbuilding through character conflict, showing what is accustomed and what can lead to problems, interesting viewpoints.

---

This felt like the introduction to something larger. I think it does need to innovate more than plot progression in volume two or I might get bored likewise or it might become too repetitive. But for the start volume in this series, I was satisfied with this!

The FL has a terribly pitiful backstory, but it does non stop in that location. I don't call up the FL has e'er had a time in her life where she was truly happy and carefree. Information technology hurts reading it because you just desire her to break free from her family unit and be as happy as she perchance can exist.

The love interests are... troublesome. Yulan is obsessive and mildly terrifying, but he truly cares for her. Only knowing her backstory, it becomes difficult to ship her with someone who is obsessive. So there is the prince, who pisses off the reader immediately afterward he appears. He is much more than incompetent than I expected him to be.

It was a very expert book that was written well, but it might be a tough read mentally.

When I picked this up I kinda expected the same sort of story as a lot of the other 'villainess gets a re-practise' stories, and boy was I wrong! I mean, it is, just the way Soratani writes it is amazing. Violette goes back in time to one year before her attempted murder of her half sister (which she does genuinely regret by the way), and from in that location nosotros acquire her story. Information technology isn't 'I've seen the error of my ways and now I'thousand going to be a good and wholesome person' (well, she did see the error of he ways) When I picked this up I kinda expected the aforementioned sort of story as a lot of the other 'villainess gets a re-do' stories, and boy was I wrong! So Violette decides to avoid her half sister and pretty much everyone else. She decides to graduate schoolhouse and become a nun in a far away monastery and never carp anyone over again. What this reveals, though is Violette's deep depression, which I constitute to exist written quite accurately. Violette is the kind of character that you desperately want to see become a happy ending, not because she realized her mistakes and repented, but because she f*cking deserves it! The story reveals Violette's life as an incredibly sad one, so it's no wonder she has depression. Her female parent was obsessed with her father in a very unhealthy way, which acquired him to carelessness Violette and her mother and take up with a mistress, with whom he had a child. Violette is ignored past her father, and her female parent, having some kind of psychotic break, forces Violette to 'become' her father instead. And then she was abandoned past one parent, and driveling by the other, and then, of a sudden, her male parent comes waltzing back in to her life with his mistress-now-wife, and the daughter he actually loves. This isn't even the whole of it, but as you read you find yourself really rooting for Violette to find some fashion out of the depressing situation that she is in, and to live a happy life, because again, she f*cking deserves it! ...more

I'chiliad quite pleased to non exist disappointed. I will do my best to not make this spoiler gratuitous…

The first matter that should be said is this book does deal with some pretty heavy subjects (kid abuse and neglect specifically), and hints at potentially worse. Nothing graphic, simply information technology doesn't hide it either. If that is triggering, I'd be weary. For those that tin can read things with those subjects, I absolutely recommend!

The characters are delightfully varied in their personalities. None of them seem like they're going to be too flat going forward.

Violette, the main graphic symbol is super introspective, and very much aware of herself. She's well aware of her flaws, even if she isn't sure how to handle them. She also is doing the best she tin, while non trying to draw attention to herself. This is probably my favorite thing, and so far, about this book.

Violette'south maid is astonishing! ten/x. Go yourself a friend and confidant like this adult female. That's not to say she isn't flawed (all the characters are after all). She is genuinely looking out for the MC though. Her backstory is touched on briefly, and information technology explains her devotion.

Violette's childhood friend is an amazingly well done grapheme. Super sweet and caring to the MC, but he can be kind of possessive over her to. Again, it'southward non exactly bad, but hoo-boy, information technology could be (I promise not, because I genuinely like him).

Violette's younger sister is, in my opinion, cloyingly sweet, and naively oblivious. Information technology'due south not bad, but it's non dandy for the MC either. She's learning.

The prince is… awkwardly incompetent. Especially where it counts (which is kind of hilarious to me).

The Duke is… something. I call up he's the simply graphic symbol I genuinely dislike (and the MC's mother, but she's not in the story long, and it's only flash backs). He is not a badly written character, but his character is merely unpleasant.

Fifty-fifty the side characters that aren't oftentimes seen are pretty well fleshed out (with the exception of the MC's step mother, who really isn't introduced at all, other than being the Duke's second married woman). Information technology's fantastic, and not something I'm used to for background characters (nosotros demand more of this! Background characters can help move the story forth to!)

It has been a while since I found a book that I struggled to actually put down. Information technology was a pleasant surprise to detect it in an unlikely source. I'thou eagerly awaiting for the 2nd one to come out at present.

Side annotation, and then I'm done. Don't skip out on the afterword from the author. It'south pretty entertaining to read the thoughts from Soratani.

After getting a second run a risk to right the wrongs of her past, Violette Rem Vahan vows to never bother anyone again.

Conspicuously, her pledge did not include extending this kindness to me, the reader.

I picked this upwards purely based off the cover and the blurb on the back, thinking information technology was exactly upwards my alley. I dear annihilation villainess/otome isekai flavored, and naturally I was fully expecting to honey this volume. I'm genuinely surprised by the positive reception it has because I institute the prose barely palatable and extremely repetitive. Having to sit down through Violette become on and on virtually the aforementioned things in mindlessly cyclic monologues made this such a slog to go through. Her life is tragic, sure, merely none of the "dark" or "depressing" stuff in this book had any emotional weight. Yous know that phrase "It's like watching a car crash"? This was more like watching a fender bender. The abiding back and along between characters wasn't entertaining enough to be chosen melodramatic, and their personalities are so trite every bit to be completely forgettable. That'd be all well and good if this was a comedy, but trying to grapple intense subject matter through such blank slates is ineffectual. If y'all want to explore trauma through a literary lens, you'd better accept well-written characters to back it upwardly. Perhaps they're less one-note to someone who hasn't played a single otome game, but Yulan is simply such a distilled and dull yandere trope without even having the decency to be entertaining in his obsession. Mila might as well non exist, Gia is a typical foreigner trope, and our MC is a poor waif of a girl who spends the entire volume woe-is-me-ing herself in and out of unpleasant situations. Unpleasant for her to experience and unpleasant for me to read about. I really felt no connectedness with her. I think Claudia was the only character I kind of sort of liked (?), merely he had much less page-time than anyone else.

The dialogue in this was peculiarly irksome, constantly switching betwixt a grapheme espousing paragraphs of their ethics, to juvenile back and forth mundanities that conveyed no data.

"Hee hee," Yulan snickered.
"Hm? What was that nigh?" Violette asked.
"Information technology'due south a seeecret."
"Y'know, Yulan, you're a pretty weird guy."

^How did dialogue like this laissez passer the editing phase.

I'll give this book one thing— there are some interesting ruminations on morality and I won't fault it for trying to convey a darker story. But merely because something deals with dark field of study thing doesn't brand information technology well written. Anything worthwhile is buried nether the extraneous prose.

However, I felt the manga better expressed the fall of her past life. ...more

I similar this a lot. The publication engagement for volume 2 is and so far away!

(view spoiler)[ I wonder what happened to Yulan and Marin in the past. As devoted as they are to Violette, there'south no style they took her life sentence lightly. Either they were planning a jailbreak in the background, or they were out of the film somehow. I don't know if there's an answer in the later volumes, or if we're just supposed to suspend our disbelief here. I hope for the erstwhile. (hide spoiler)]

Interesting story

Started off with her in prison apologizing and beingness sorry. Never telling who she injure what harm (kill or hurt) she caused to end up in prison. So far the story is interesting, the only problem is the next book takes to long to come out sometimes. I promise that things get a little better for her in the next book and that she starts to like her sister improve.

It seems to be setting up a lot

Full disclosure, I'm pretty sure I read a version of this equally an unpublished light novel. If non I read a story remarkably similar, with poorer grammar and much improve story setup. This seems to be missing bits, or it rambles... like this review.
Curt version it is a solid iii stars

The reviews say that the story is dark and depressing. I thought information technology was cute

Its not all roses though - nosotros exercise have some sorry parts especially in relation to Violet and her family unit, but these parts are few and far between, encompassed by the beautiful awkwardness of a second chance life and blooming teenage romance.

So like I said...cute🤷🏾‍♀️

Entertaining

Entertaining and total of depth. The story does not disappoint. Each new price of information leads to a deeper understanding of the dissimilar characters making a very rich story and then far!

Can't wait to run across what happens side by side

I enjoyed the story and can't wait to see how the characters grow and go along to change. Peculiarly tin't look to meet if Vio keeps her hope to never carp anyone again.

This was pretty good, although a bit darker than I prefer. Still, I wanted to proceed post-obit the story.

I am interested with the premise merely the writing fabricated it impossible for me to become through with it. I am extremely forgiving when information technology comes to writing way and take read other low-cal novels that suffers from bad writing, just I only can't read this one without cringing. Astonishing characters with an interesting take on morality

My kiddo's review: This volume is by far one of the all-time I've read in a while, the master character is complex and conflicted, she's done terrible things only yous still want to route for her.
